- Abstract
A valorização excessiva de características meramente estéticas tem historicamente premiado equinos obesos em exposições de raças de origem ibérica. Ao mesmo tempo, crescem evidências científicas que a deposição excessiva de gordura é fator de risco importante para laminite e osteoartrite nesses animais. Objetivou-se verificar e comparar a prevalência de alterações no posicionamento da falange distal e sinais de lesões degenerativas na articulação metacarpofalangeana em equinos Mangalarga Marchador (MM) de alto desempenho com e sem sinais de obesidade e adiposidade cervical excessiva. Para tanto, analisaramse escore de condição corporal (ECC), diâmetro cervical, morfometria radiológica do casco e lesões radiográficas da articulação metacarpofalangeana em equinos apresentados nas exposições nacionais do MM nos anos de 2011 (n = 82), 2017 (n = 36) e 2018 (n = 50). A grande maioria dos animais apresentou sinais de obesidade (82%) e deposição excessiva de tecido adiposo na região cervical dorsal (89,74%), características já relacionadas a doenças de desenvolvimento, desregulação insulínica e laminite. Por meio do teste exato de Fisher seguido pelo cálculo da razão de prevalências, verificou-se que a prevalência de afundamento da falange distal (> 10 mm) foi 1,8 (IC = 1,1 a 3,2) vezes maior em equinos com sobrepeso (ECC > 6) quando comparados com os demais (70% vs. 39%, p = 0,0011). Além disso, os animais com adiposidade cervical ou pescoço cristado (diâmetro cranial do pescoço = 78 cm) apresentaram prevalência 1,4 (IC = 1,4 a 3,8) vezes maior de afundamento (82% vs. 37%, p = 0,008) e 3,1 (IC = 1,5 a 6,9) vezes mais osteoartrite evidente de boleto (64% vs. 12%, p = 0,002) do que os animais sem pescoço cristado. Os resultados reforçam achados anteriores do Grupo Equinova de que a obesidade, com destaque para a adiposidade cervical, promove afundamento da falange distal e trazem evidências inéditas que esses são fatores de risco para maior prevalência de osteoartrite do boleto em equinos MM. Adicionalmente, estabeleceu-se o diâmetro cervical cranial (medido a 25% da distância da nuca à cernelha) acima de 78 cm como parâmetro simples e inovador para indicar risco elevado para a ocorrência de laminite endocrinopática e osteoartrite de boleto na raça.
