- Abstract
Discharged jet from desalination plants has harmful effects on the surrounding environment so that it is essential to investigate its behavior in detail. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the discretization schemes of convective terms in Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations on the inclined dense jet behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this issue is not explored yet and needs further investigation. For this purpose, different discretization schemes such as the first and second-order upwind, the third-order cubic, and the limited linear scheme with a weighted combination of first and second-order schemes are considered. All simulations in the present study were done using OpenFOAM software and a large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model with the dynamic Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS). The numerical results reveal that the limited linear scheme with a weighting coefficient of one presents the best agreement with experimental results and could capture the geometric, mixing, and turbulence characteristics of the inclined dense jet more accurately than other numerical schemes. Finally, the effects of the jet densimetric Froude number on the jet behavior are investigated using the preferred scheme to further investigate the predictive capability of the present numerical model. Article Highlights: Effects of the discretization of N-S convective terms are investigated by analyzing different schemes. The predictive ability of the LES model is improved by using a suitable scheme. Prediction of the turbulence characteristics is improved by using the suitable scheme.
