- Abstract
Recent studies have documented the increased importance of publication in the promotion and tenure decision, especially publication in research journals. This study examines changes in publication opportunities over the period 1970-1988. The number of authors publishing each year in two leading journals, The Accounting Review and Journal of Accounting Research, exhibits no trend, except recent decreases, over a period in which the population of accounting academics has nearly doubled. Accordingly, opportunities to publish in these journals have diminished. During the period 1982-1988, however, a significant number of new accounting research journals have initiated publication. The data indicate that, over this recent period, the number of articles published in 20 accounting research journals studied has increased at a rate faster than the growth in accounting academics. While the overall opportunities to publish in such journals have improved, they are still very limited relative to the number of academic accountants.
