- Abstract
In the Ottoman Empire, fatwas were generally given in a plain language and prose, but among them were also found in Arabic, Persian, münşiyane, or poetry. Poetry fatwas have been an exciting type of verse expression seen in every field in the Ottoman Empire since the 16th century and paved the way for forming a colorful environment in Turkish literature. These fatwas were generally given to the sheikhulislams and to the muftis who was a poet because they were asked about the question. It is not overlooked that these fatwas are given in a literary conversation and in a certain composition, since the person who directs the verse is also a poet. It can be said that sheikhulislams and other scholars, who had an important position among Ottoman divan poets, gave many verse fatwa since the 16th century, which led to the emergence of colorful fatwa literature. Most of the poetry fatwas that we have introduced until today belonged to particular and famous sheikhulislams and their sons or grandchildren who came to the fore with their poetry. However, there are also Shaykh al-Islams who do not put forward any work of poetry and prose, but when asked about a poetical issue, they answer it with a single couplet or verse, and one of them is Sunullah Efendi. In this study, the only detectable poetry fatwa of Sunullah Efendi, which was not known to have a poetry example among his fatwas before is introduced.
