- Abstract
Unión-Artístico-Musical was the most important symphonic orchestra at the end of the Nineteenth century in Madrid after Sociedad de Conciertos. Since its foundation in 1878, this group played an important role energizing social spaces and spreading foreign repertoire in general and Spanish in particular, despite the fact that the Spanish musical identity was being debated more than ever. The present article aims to review the most important activity of this orchestra, divided into different stages according to its principal conductors: Tomás Bretón, Ruperto Chapí, Manuel Fernández Caballero, Casimiro Espino and Jerónimo Jiménez among others.
