- Title
Heidegger's Media Critique: Film, Western Metaphysics, and the Figure of Japanese Aesthetics.
- Authors
GOEBEL, ROLF J.
- Abstract
In A Dialogue on Language between a Japanese and an Inquirer (1953/54), Martin Heidegger offers a deterritorializing self-critique on the subliminal collusion between Western metaphysics and modern media, especially film. Framed by an imaginative (mis-)interpretation of key concepts of traditional Japanese sensibility, the Dialogue opens up an ambiguous space for the polyphonic exploration of the promises and limits of intercultural translation. Thus, Heidegger anticipates a direct linkage between metaphysical self-critique, technological media analysis, sound studies, and postcolonial theory that resonates productively with our own time.
