- Abstract
Interaction between different transition element cations (TM+), simultaneously present in a glass host, affects the electromagnetic radiation absorption spectrum profile. The effects may be quite drastic in certain cases. In this research an attempt was made to determine whether interaction occurs when certain TM(1) and TM(2) low concentration dopants are simultaneously present in a glass host. Any structural factors that control such processes were also investigated. It was found that an interplay between the host-basicity and the electronic structure of TM(1,2) determines this process. Only redox type interaction was detected. Dopants pairs like Cr+Cu and Cr+Mn interacted in a suitable silicate host, and Ti+Mn in one based on P2O5. Interaction is quite a rare event.
