- Abstract
The article presents a study examining the biodirectional association between depressive symptoms and type 2 diabetes. The design and setting of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, which involved U.S. men and women aged 45 to 84 is described. The main outcomes measured include elevated depressive symptoms, use of antidepressant drugs, fasting glucose levels and type 2 diabetes. Researchers report a modest link between baseline depressive symptoms and incidence of type 2 diabetes which was partly explained by lifestyle factors.
