- Authors
Voelker, Rebecca
- Abstract
The article discusses treatment for disaster victims, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are mentioned. Richard Weisler and colleagues have provided online information about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for health-care professionals. There is the possibility that survivors will experience psychiatric disorders caused by emotional trauma. A 46% rate for PTSD was reported in Mexico after floods and mudslides in 1999. The risk of suicide could increase in hurricane survivors who have major depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or substance abuse problems. Mark Townsend and Fred Lopez, faculty of Louisiana State University, comment on their experiences in treating Katrina survivors.
