- Title
Biomarkers for coronary heart disease: predictive value or background noise?
- Authors
Mitka, Mike
- Abstract
Looks at biomarkers for disease and how they may eventually aid in the diagnosis of illness. Attention on biomarker C-reactive protein which has been shown as a predictor of risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, sudden heart attack and peripheral arterial disease; Recommendations for when to use the test from the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Unanswered question which is whether or not treatment for elevated levels improves outcomes; Suggestion for clinicians on the criteria that should be met by a patient before using the test; Need for care in incorporating biomarkers into risk assessment.
