- Abstract
The paper focuses on the regional culture in two districts of Kaunas city, Vilijampolé and Lampėdžiai. The article is based on field research carried out between 1998 and 2009 in Kaunas. The field research methods are: structural and partially structural interview. The article aims at revealing the characteristics of regional culture in two Kaunas districts in the 1920s and 1930s. The study is carried out using the historical-comparative method. Conclusions: Vilijampolė and Lampėdžiai were related by the general regional culture of Kaunas region, that is, the same geographical area and respective features of life style. Such features are: the landscape; the agrarian lifestyle (farming, fishing, which were replaced by urban businesses in the 1940s); the same Catholic Holy Trinity Parish; similar linguistic community in which bilingualism was widely spread. The process of modernisation that spread from Kaunas to its peripheries offered new alternatives to the traditional lifestyle. The traditional businesses of Lampėdžiai residents were replaced by an urban one, that is, summer house renting. Vilijampolė agrarian businesses were in turn succeeded by working class professions. Individuals representing the new elite social strata could also choose new ways of expressing and giving meaning to their ties with their environment.
