- Title
Correspondence: A Possible (But not Probable?) Case of Treponemal Disease.
- Authors
Harper, K. N.; Zuckerman, M. K.; Armelagos, G. J.
- Abstract
The authors comment on a report on a possible case of treponemal disease from England during the 11th to 12th century A.D. They assert that the researchers failed to establish an Old World case of treponematoses with an unassailable pre-Columbian date, as the periosteal lesions they described are not suggestive of or specific to the disease. They support the conclusion that only a systematic review of skeletal pathology and radiometric dating will help the research on treponematoses.
