- Abstract
This paper provides a socioanalytic reading of Australia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper argues that Australians are experiencing the pandemic as an outside threat, generated overseas and spread by outsiders, and that this stems from the chosen glory/trauma of the arrival of the First Fleet. The paper draws on the work of Volkan and Boccara to demonstrate how the collective unconscious gives rise to the unequal application of governmental support and the unfair treatment of the vulnerable. The paper concludes with some thoughts on leadership in a crisis, and proposes a kind of containing and thoughtful leadership that those in authority have the opportunity to practice.
