- Abstract
The article describes the occurrence of invasive Streptoccocus pyogenes or group A streptococcal (GAS) disease among residents of nursing homes in Minnesota from 1995 to 2006. A statewide surveillance for invasive GAS disease was initiated in April 1995 through Active Bacterial Core Surveillance (ABC), with information about a case-patient's residence collected on case report form. There were 1,858 cases of invasive GAS disease from April 1995 through 2006, with 35% of them in the 65- year- old range of age. Meanwhile, there was at least 1 case of invasive GAS disease from the 20% total licensed nursing homes in the state.
