- Title
The audiences of Milton's Italian verse.
- Authors
Hale, John K.
- Abstract
The article focuses on various kinds of audiences addressed by sixteenth century poet John Milton in his Italian poems. The article finds at-least four audiences. One, which is situated within the poems, as recipients or listeners. Another is constituted by the language-community of Italian. A third is the language-community of English. And the last comes Milton himself. It is opined that the second audience holds the greatest interest because it shows Milton's ambitions uniquely extended to a language which is not his own.
