- Abstract
The article presents the results of research which was conducted in an effort to estimate the prevalence and patterns of prescription drug, over the counter drug and dietary supplement use among older people in the Unites States, and to examine potential drug interactions related to the drug use. Researchers examined 3,000 older people from five communities. They found that in their sample of community dwelling older adults, prescription and nonprescription drugs were commonly used together, and that as a result, one in twenty five individuals were at risk of a major drug interaction.
