- Abstract
The article discusses the possibility to treat type 2 diabetes by preserving β-cells and preventing the deterioration of glucose control. The findings of several studies on β-cell function among subjects with normal and impaired glucose tolerance are tackled. Also tackled are the effects of drugs such as metformin, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ and incretins on β-cells. The authors conclude that the dysfunction of β-cells plays a major role in the development and progression of type 2 diabetes.
