- Abstract
In September 2020, the long-serving Prime Minister Shinzō Abe resigned, and September 2020 to August 2021 became the first year following the Abe Era in Japan's foreign and security policy. As in the previous year, the COVID-19 pandemic overshadowed much of Japan's diplomatic activity, now under the new Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide. Despite Suga's inexperience in foreign policy, Japan was nonetheless able to reach important achievements, such as coming to security agreements with significant partners (first and foremost Australia), pushing forward its Free and Open Indo-Pacific initiative, and applying so-called »vaccine diplomacy«, which set Japan ahead of longterm rival China as a leading power in combating the pandemic in Southeast Asia.
