- Abstract
Madagascar is the focus of intense research on its biodiversity but many remote forests and regions still remain poorly studied. This is the case for the Alan'Antanetivy forest corridor and other forests within the region, in north-eastern Madagascar. We surveyed the Antsahanadraitry forest located at the east of this corridor, allocated for timber exploitation under the 'KoloAla Manaompana' forest management plan. We conducted diurnal and nocturnal line transect distance sampling and observed four species of lemur, including the rare hairy eared dwarf lemur (Allocebus trichotis) and the critically endangered black and white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata). Our preliminary results call for a larger biodiversity survey of the Alan'Antanetivy forest corridor and the surrounding region, and for additional special management areas to protect threatened lemur species.
