- Authors

- Abstract
This article focuses on the report of the British Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution about the environmental aspects of transportation. The Royal Commission expressed particular concern about the consequences of further large-scale growth in road traffic. It highlighted the conflict between official forecasts of a doubling in traffic by 2025, and a road-building programme. The report drew attention to the environmental implication of the rapid growth of air traffic. The Commission proposed specific targets for increasing the proportion of travel by public transport over the next 25 years, and for increasing the proportions of freight carried by rail and water.
