- Abstract
Many symptoms of Alzheimer's are not recognized by the general population until later stages of the disease. One possible reason behind this may be that people are not aware enough about dementia and its consequences. In order to measure the level of awareness amongst people in several cities, numerous surveys were conducted on Alzheimer's awareness. A very similar study was conducted in Montreal, Canada, in order to further assess the general trends in Alzheimer awareness. 36 participants filled out the survey; 19 were under 20 years old and 17 were 20 years old and older; 7 males and 29 females responded to the survey; 14 had a family member affected by the disease while 22 did not. The young adults in Montreal were much more knowledgeable (78% scoring at four or above points) than they believed themselves to be (53% thought of themselves as knowledgeable). The results validate the general trend from prior studies that young adults are well-aware, given that 78% are knowledgeable compared to only 39% affected by the disease. The data herein validates prior general trends detailed in published literature. Although the population is well-aware, it is far from perfect; studies should look into how awareness can be increased further.
