- Abstract
In this study, growth kinetics survival and some productive parameters in silver Arawana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) juveniles cultured in closed recirculation systems (CRS) were evaluated. This work was conducted during four months in the Aquaculture Laboratory Sciences Faculty, Nueva Granada Military University, located at Cajicá (Cundinamarca). Juveniles of O. bicirrhosum were stocked (30 fish per tank) in two identical CRS (TK1 and TK2). The mean weights were 12.2 g ± 3.47 g, and a mean total length of 15.32 cm ± 1.39 cm for TK1, and 14.83 g ± 7.47 g, and 16.25 cm ± 2.76 cm for TK2. Each CRS consisted of the following components: a 500 L plastic tank, connected to 208 L plastic tank (biofilter), where the water was recirculated by a pump submergible (2500 L/h). Juveniles were fed twice a day with Truchina at 50% protein the first three months, and the fourth month with Truchina at 38% proteín, adjusted to 10% body weight. Water quality sampling was conducted throughout the study, and measured parameters included ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature and pH. Each 15 days 10 randomly chosen individual fish were weighed and total length were obtained. Productive parameters were calculated as: weight gain, total biomass, specific growth rate (SGR) among others. At the end of the study, juveniles of O. bicirrhosum exhibited a survival of 80% for TK1 and 83 % for TK2, with a final individual weight of 66.96 g ± 16.86 g and 55.91g ± 10.89 g for TK1 and TK2 respectively. The weight gained was of 54.76 g for TK1 and 41.08 for TK2, with a total biomass of 1.6 kg for TK1 and 1.4 Kg for TK2. Specific growth rate were 1.72% days -1 for TK1 and 1.34% days -1 for TK2. Final total lengths were 25.13 cm ± 1.98 cm for TK1 and 23.75cm ± 1.54 cm for TK2. The high survival found at the end of the study, moreover the results of growth in this study (weight and length) were similar to those reported in earth ponds, is indicated that CRS are adequate for reared O. bicirrhosum.
