- Abstract
This article discusses misconceptions about sustainable anesthesia and the importance of environmental sustainability in healthcare. It emphasizes the need to deliver healthcare without compromising the health of future populations or the ability to provide care. The article addresses misconceptions such as the belief that there is a single eco-friendly anesthesia technique and that sustainability efforts will impact patient care or lead to higher costs. It also discusses the importance of reducing waste, engaging with national organizations, and considering the environmental impacts alongside clinical and economic factors. The article highlights the potential benefits of reducing wastage in piped nitrous oxide systems and curbing the use of single-use plastics. It cautions against relying solely on technological solutions and recycling, and emphasizes the need for multiple changes to achieve more sustainable practices. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of striving for sustainable healthcare to mitigate the future impact of climate change on people's health and healthcare provision.
