- Title
Supporting adults with autism — don't forget comorbid ADHD.
- Authors
Leaver, Laurence; Cubbin, Sally; Parry, Allyson
- Abstract
The letter discusses the importance of screening autistic patients for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and highlights the high prevalence of ADHD in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The authors argue that diagnosing and treating ADHD could greatly benefit individuals with ASD, as difficulties with attention and executive function can exacerbate social problems and contribute to low self-esteem and low mood. They recommend using a simple six-question scoring tool, the ASRS, to screen for ADHD. The authors disclose their affiliations with the UK Adult ADHD Network (UKAAN) and an ADHD clinic.
