- Abstract
This article discusses a study on the targeting of flavodoxin to specific chloroplasts in maize cells to increase drought tolerance. The researchers generated transgenic maize lines with flavodoxin expression and targeting restricted to either mesophyll or bundle sheath chloroplasts. The results showed that maize plants with flavodoxin expression in mesophyll chloroplasts exhibited increased tolerance to oxidative stress and drought compared to wild-type and plants with flavodoxin expression in bundle sheath chloroplasts. This research suggests that targeting flavodoxin to specific chloroplasts could be a potential strategy for improving stress tolerance in maize. The study also provides insights into the relationship between environmental hardships and C4 photosynthesis in maize.
