Summary: 湿疹和哮喘是常见的慢性疾病。15‐20%的学龄儿童以及2‐10%的成人受湿疹困扰,而16‐18%的英国人受哮喘困扰。近四分之三患有早发性湿疹(一种严重且持续的湿疹)的儿童将在日后发展为哮喘。丝聚蛋白基因可帮助生成一种蛋白质,在皮肤上形成一道防护屏障,抵御引发过敏的外来物侵入。大约十分之一的人群出现丝聚蛋白基因变化,这会导致其生成缺陷蛋白,不再能够帮助维持此皮肤屏障。本项研究在英国开展,旨在发现丝聚蛋白突变是否关系到治疗湿疹和哮喘的药物处方增加和/或哮喘急性加重(即恶化)次数增加,从而是否会带来各种医疗成本。研究表明,出现此基因变化的湿疹和哮喘儿童患者在大多数童年时期对湿疹和哮喘药物的需求都会大幅增加。出现基因变化的哮喘儿童患者在九年期间还更容易出现哮喘发作,导致疾病的住院治疗和人力成本都相应增加。由此得出结论,只需在一生当中的任何时间(包括出生时或幼儿期)进行简单的“唾液”基因检测,便能够帮助预测湿疹和哮喘等常见慢性病患者的长期医疗成本以及患上更严重疾病的长期风险。出现丝聚蛋白基因突变的儿童和成人可能从具有针对性的治疗方案(比如从出生开始日常使用润肤剂)中受益,为医疗保健系统节省成本并改善疾病控制和生活质量。
