- Abstract
The text is a review of the book "Trends and Drifts of 20th Century Semantics" written by Rudy Mostacero, renowned in the field of linguistics and philosophy of language. The book is organized into three chapters that address the origin and development of fundamental linguistic theories, the transition from structuralism to generativism, and semantics in the context of interdisciplinary studies. Mostacero provides a critique and epistemological analysis of the different semantic theories and currents that have emerged, identifying their strengths and weaknesses. He also highlights the importance of pragmatics and discourse linguistics in the movement towards text and discourse. The text presents a summary of the development of transformational generative linguistics and semantics throughout the 20th century, mentioning the work of Noam Chomsky and his proposal of a transformational generative grammar, as well as the evolution of generative semantics and its integration with cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches. The importance of pragmatics and discourse analysis in the study of linguistic meaning is also mentioned, as well as the studies of semantics in Venezuela and the need for updating in postgraduate programs.
