- Abstract
The article discusses the artistic depiction of one naval battle, fought during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the U.S. The action between USS Chesapeake and HMS Shannon frigates provided the inspiration for paintings and prints of the battle, portraits of the captains and officers, satirical prints, illustrations in naval histories, commemorative silverware, images on ceramics and scrimshaw, a re-enactment of the battle on the Serpentine, poems and songs performed on the London, England, stage. This article focuses on the work of British artists, and in particular, three groups of work, namely the memorabilia produced for the general public, images and artefacts to and collected by Captain Philip Broke and a portfolio of prints which portray the official version of events.
