- Title
Treating Severe Malaria: Artesunate or Quinine?
- Authors
Shah, Dheeraj
- Abstract
The article discusses the result of randomized trials on the effectiveness of artesunate and quinine in treating severe malaria. It notes that treatment with artesunate lowered the risk of death and the parasite clearance time among the patients. It recommends artemisinin derivatives for the treatment of malaria when quinine is contraindicated. The author advises against the indiscriminate use of artesunate to prevent the development of resistance.
