- Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in children attending a municipal public school. Methodology: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. A questionnaire and collection of stool samples from the students were applied for parasitological analysis. Statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS version 18.0 software; and to verify association between the variables, the Pearson chi-square exact test was used, considering in all analyzes performed a significance level of 5%. Results: Of the 50 samples analyzed, 48% were negative and 52% positive; highlighting the following parasites: Entamoeba coli (38%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (31%). Among male participants, 68.4% were positive for parasites; while among females, this positivity corresponded to 41.9%. Among the children who ingested water directly from the tap, 51.6% had some kind of parasite. It was also found that most of the study sample had a family income below one minimum wage and lived in poor conditions of basic sanitation. Conclusion: Preventive measures should be implemented by health professionals through health control and education programs, aiming to guide and raise awareness among the population studied here about the diseases caused by enteroparasitic diseases.
