- Abstract
This article examines the efficacy of home monitoring of blood glucose in improving care of patients with type 2 diabetes who are not using insulin. Intensive monitoring of blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes not using insulin results in a small decrease in glycosylated hemoglobin levels but does not change fasting blood glucose levels. While urine glucose monitoring works just as well. In the studies that compared blood glucose monitoring with no monitoring, glycosylated hemoglobin levels were nominally lower in the blood glucose monitoring group. But blood glucose monitoring did not produce better glycosylated hemoglobin levels than urine glucose monitoring.
