- Abstract
We theoretically investigate the gain and noise figure of an L-band gain-flattened EDFA obtained from the one-stage single-pass, one-stage double-pass, and two-stage double-pass configurations. Compared to the one-stage single-pass scheme, the two-stage double-pass amplifier provides gain enhancement of about 4.2 dB without paying much noise penalty. By using the one-stage double-pass scheme, the gain is improved by about 4 dB. However, the noise figure was drastically degraded by >2 dB. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
