- Abstract
Background. The employees of State Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) is an occupational group that is exposed to frequent stressful situations. Most medical staff do not have any support from the employer in the form of psychological care, which may result in little satisfaction and poorer quality of life. Aim. The analysis of traumatic events experienced in the workplace and the assessment of their impact on private life, job satisfaction and willingness to engage in risky behaviors among SEMS employees. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 92 people aged 20-59 years, employees of SEMS. The study was conducted as a diagnostic survey using the original questionnaire. Results. Most frequent causes of stress included patient aggression, dangerous working conditions and powerlessness during rescue operations. By the participants, the most frequent consequences of stress were: irritability, decreased interest in work and daily duties, susceptibility to depressive disorders and anxiety. Most frequently declared ways to reduce stress were conversations with family members and physical activity. In the study group, the occurrence of aggressive behaviors, risky sexual behaviors, falling into addictions was also noticed. Most participants believed that the employer should guarantee them psychological care in their workplace. Conclusions. As a result of stress at workplace, SEMS employees are becoming more irritable, more prone to depression and anxiety disorders. They also show little interest in their work and daily duties. In order to improve the quality of life of SEMS employees, it would be necessary to provide organized psychological care in their workplace.
