- Abstract
Whipple's disease is a rare chronic systemic infection that affects the digestive system and can be lethal.1 Its characteristic endoscopic findings are white shaggy villi in the duodenum and jejunum,2,3 and capsule endoscopy (CE) has been reported to be useful in confirming the extent of intestinal lesions.3 However, there are only a few reports that show the usefulness of balloon endoscopy (BE).4 A 37-year-old Japanese man was referred to our hospital because of anemia, continuous diarrhea, and abdominal pain for the past 2 years. For diagnosing Whipple's disease based on small intestinal lesions, BE proves to be useful to obtain detailed findings and assess the severity of the lesions, whereas CE is useful in observing the lesions, particularly during follow-up.
