- Authors
Conlon, Robert; Smith, Richard V.
- Abstract
The article considers the role of corporate boards and the chief executive officer (CEO) in effective succession management. Transforming succession management into an activity that can foster shareholder value is said to be possible in light of an increased scrutiny on the process. Organizations are advised to segment their workforce based on the roles that drive strategic capabilities in order to determine the critical roles requiring a succession plan. The need for the board to be active in assessing potential talent, mitigating risk and making the CEO accountable for management is stressed. The valuable steps in succession management are enumerated including defining the role requirements and measuring the progress of internal candidates.
