- Abstract
Guillain-Barrè Syndrome (GBS), a rapid and degenerative disease process affecting a large number of our population poses significant nursing concerns, due to its debilitating affects. This disorder is characterised by demyelination of nervous tissue, resulting in impaired saltatory conduction and is challenging to manage as a result of its acute and rapid onset. Signs and symptoms range from respiratory muscle failure to immobility and cardiovascular compromise. This case study identifies and outlines the nursing management of a patient with a presentation of GBS in the intensive care unit (ICU). A brief overview of pathophysiology, patient presentation, past medical and social history, pharmacological and medical treatment will be included. This case study however will specifically focus upon nursing management, with regard to patient prioritisation, for example airway, breathing and circulation, disease progression and days spent in the ICU.
