- Abstract
Introducción: La obesidad es una enfermedad crónica, compleja y multifactorial, que suele iniciarse en la infancia y la adolescencia, e implica importantes consecuencias sociales, económicas y sanitarias. El sobrepeso u obesidad, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) constituye uno de los problemas de salud pública más preocupantes del siglo XXI puesto que la prevalencia de la obesidad se ha triplicado en las últimas dos décadas. Objetivo: Analizar, desde el ámbito de la epidemiología, la causalidad, historia natural y planteamiento de hipótesis de la obesidad. Metodología de trabajo: Se ha requerido la búsqueda y acceso a fuentes de información científico-técnicas en salud (IBECS, PubMed, BioMed, Scielo, International OTF, OMS, CDC, NIH, OPS, Weekly Epidemiological Report). Resultados: El estudio del nicho ecológico de la obesidad infanto-juvenil permite definir los factores determinantes en la obesidad. Los cánones y postulados de Hill actúan como modelos que nos permiten abordar las asociaciones causales de la obesidad, con respecto a variables que pueden ser exploradas. Atendiendo a las visiones epistemológicas de Popper, Lakatos, Kuhn, y Feyerabend se pueden discutir las potenciales hipótesis que pueden formularse en materia de obesidad. La aplicación de hipótesis conceptual y operativa permite comprender los distintos fenómenos existentes con otros implicados en obesidad.
