- Abstract
This article examines a conceptual framework for the integration of language and content instruction in second and foreign language classrooms. The reason behind integrating language and content teaching lies in the fact that language is learned most effectively for communication in meaningful, purposeful social and academic contexts. Content presents a primary motivational incentive for language learning since it is interesting and of some value to the learner and therefore worth learning. The proposed model calls for a recognition of the importance of language structures, skills, or functions that are characteristic of different content areas. The shift toward content-based approaches has taken place since the success of immersion as a model of foreign language education has provided strong evidence for the effectiveness of language learning through subject-matter learning. Extensive research has established that immersion students learn the academic content mentioned in the school curriculum and simultaneously develop significant levels of foreign language proficiency.
