- Abstract
This article analyzes the sale of Lafquenche Mapuche land in the Arauco district during the years prior to peacemaking in Araucania. Through the notary’s registry, the identities of salespeople, the sizes of land plots and transaction values are revealed. The article suggests that the systematic sale of properties created the material basis for the subsequent integration of Araucania and its inhabitants into the Chilean State. A complementary argument is made that silencing of this issue not only entirely limits Lafquenche historic agency, but also makes it difficult to understand the position that the rest of the Mapudungun- speaking tribes took with regards to the challenges imposed simultaneously by modernity, mercantilism and the state system.
