- Abstract
The most persistent conductive hearing loss in children can be congenital (malformations) or aquired, by chronic middle otitis or external and middle ear trauma. The hearing during infancy and childhood has an extremely important role in speech development, as well as in psychoeducational and psychosocial development. The persistent conductive hearing loss has different impact on these processes depending on the severity, from less important consequences for unilateral mild conduction hearing loss, to more serious disfunctions for moderate bilateral conductive hearing loss. In order to avoid potential negative consequences, the persistent hearing loss has to be identified and treated as soon as possible. The hearing aid choice depends on the degree and the cause of hearing loss. If possible, the first option should be the noninvasive conventional hearing aid. The patients with contraindication for conventional devices (external ear malformations, chronic external or middle ear infections) can be successfully treated by implantable hearing aids.
