- Abstract
As an Asian and Buddhist nation, Thailand is a country where people concern with charitable giving and do so through several channels. This paper seeks to quantify the probability and monetary level of charitable donations in Thailand. We employ data collected by National Statistical Office on 76 provinces -- with detailed analysis of a target province, Mukdahan -- to estimate both Tobit and double-hurdle models. The latter model is appropriate for disaggregating household behavior into two phases: household participation behavior and household expenditure behavior. The results reveal that economic factors must be complemented by the level of education, the conservative nature of the family (e.g., number of members, use of traditional language), and the provincial location within the East-West Economic Corridor. In contrast, expenditures on recreational consumption of alcohol reduce the probability and level of participation in charity. Unexpectedly, there is a significantly positive relationship between gambling expenditure and the probability of giving to religious charity. This phenomenon may be because people want to either reduce their guilt or pray for higher returns from gambling.
