- Abstract
With the decrease of birth and mortality rates, Brazilian population experiences higher levels of life expectancy and ageing. As a consequence, aged people came to develop chronic-degenerative diseases, to spend more time in hospital in intensive care units, to need mechanical ventilation caused by higher incidence of respiratory failure and difficulties in weaning. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the influence of age on weaning and mechanical ventilation in elderly patients admitted to Intensive Care Units. This literature review used the main data-base in health area, as Mdconsult, Pubmed, Bireme, Scielo, Lilacs, Medline and Capes periodicals, from which the main publications between January 1990 and March 2009 and its describers were analyzed. Results pointed that the age of the patient was not the main factor associated with worst prognosis, but the comorbid conditions, the gravity of the disease in the moment of admission, and duration of mechanical ventilation. New researches related to elderly patients under mechanical ventilation must be encouraged not only because they are scarce, but mostly because they will help medical staff to do better evaluation and prognosis of weaning for this population.
