- Abstract
In the U.S., Australia and some other countries, it is seen as discrimination to dismiss someone on the basis of age. From the individual's perspective it is of course, clear that anyone who wants to retire should be allowed to do so. Work takes its toll and as people have only one life, thus they need to find the right balance between the pleasures of professional achievement and those on a more private level that are often postponed during the course of a career. The counter-arguments usually focus on the need to free up positions for younger colleagues, and the belief that these positions should be available to them as early as possible in their careers.
