- Abstract
The Federal Employees Health-Care Freedom of Choice Act of 1987 was reported out of the U.S. House Committee on Post Office and Civil Service on February 3, 1988. A vote on the House floor is expected soon. A similar freedom of choice bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Barbara Mikulski. The Federal Employees Health Care Freedom of Choice Act of 1987 would allow the participants in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) the freedom to choose the health-care provider of their choice. The FEHBP is the largest employer sponsored group health insurance program in the world, it serves over 300 insurance plans. The current law enables fee-for-service plans in the FEHBP to restrict or deny reimbursement to most nonphysician practitioners, thereby restricting an enrollee's freedom of choice among providers.
