- Title
Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses: Is It Time to Stop Using the Word "Rare"?
- Authors
Dowdle, Walter; Kew, Olen
- Abstract
The author reflects on the attenuated oral polio vaccine in the U.S. which was described by the World Health Organization as among the safest vaccines in use today. He argues that there are polioviruses that are derived from the vaccine itself. He points out that evidence suggests that vaccine coverage is insufficient should be alert to the risk of the emergence of vaccine-derive polioviruses.
