- Title
"Against such hellish mischief fit to oppose": A Grotian Reading of Milton's War in Heaven.
- Authors
Oldman, Elizabeth
- Abstract
The article offers poetry criticism of the epic poem "Paradise Lost" by English poet John Milton. It explores the major theme of good and evil in the work, focusing on the War in Heaven passage from book 6 from the perspective of Dutch social philosopher Hugo Grotius. The theory that Milton projected an interpretation of war as a containable entity rather than a chaotic and uncontrollable one is discussed in detail.
