- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the body composition, somatotype, and the prevalence of precursory syndromes of eating disorders in 27 rhythmic gymnasts (15.2 ± 2.6 yrs). Two instruments were used according to the purpose of evaluation: EAT-26 (presence inappropriate eating behaviors) and BITE (presence of attitudes suggestive of bulimia). The subjects' anthropometric measurements were performed in all voluntary adopting standardizations of ISAK, obtaining body composition, and somatotype. The percentage of fat was obtained by the equation by Siri from the estimate of body density by the Withers equation. We used the Slaughter equation for the gymnasts who were younger than 18 yrs old to obtain the percentage of fat. To determine the somatotype we used the methodology proposed by Earth-Carter. The findings in this study indicate the existence of eating behaviors that depict precursor syndromes of eating disorders among athletes of the youth categories (18.2%) and adults (16.7%), although their body composition is consistent with healthy standards for their age, group, and sex.
