- Authors
Thomas, Sue
- Abstract
The article discusses Miss Campbell, a character created by writer Robert Wedderburn for the ultraradical 19th-century journal "The Axe Laid to the Root, or a Fatal Blow to Oppressors." It focuses on scholarly research on the authenticity of Miss Campbell, described as a slave-owning woman of color in Jamaica. The author goes on to suggest that the character is simply a fabrication used for satirical purposes as well as to promote Spencean thought.
