- Abstract
The article focuses on "An Essay on Charity, and Charity-Schools," by Bernard Mandeville. In this essay he offered an example to enforce his views about pity or compassion. He classified this as an instinct, activated by sense-stimuli regardless of the moral or emotional character of the person concerned. In his book Mandeville has nicely demonstrated his debating point in practice by provoking an uncontrollable gush of horror, outrage and pity. One of those impressed was Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who adapted Mandeville's example thirty years later in his works.
