- Abstract
The article states that in his helpful notes to his edition of The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry: The 1893 Text, Donald L. Hill offers Gautier's as a source for the "old fancy" of the transmigration and reincarnation of souls and of reminiscence of the experience of former lives', which finds famous expression in Pater's sentence, from his "Leonord" essay. Mario Praz quotes this passage in his discussion of the English development of the French idea of the book "Fatal Woman."
